A leiomyosarcoma was dignosed in July 2003 in a myoma situated at the external wall of the uterus, facing the back.
In September 2003 a hysterectomy was performed, as well as the removal of several lymph glands.
The ovaries remained untouched.
This was follwed by a 25 day course of radiation therapy (45 Gray).
In March 2004 further metastases were found in the left lung.
In April 2004 these tumors were removed by an operation (thoracotomy). At the same time several more Lymph glands were removed.
Pathology performed on any of the removed Lymph glands showed no sign of malignant growth.
In May 2004 further metastases were detected in the right lung (four) as well as one in the liver (size 4 cm), which is located directly adjacent to the main artery, rendering it inoperable.
In June 2004 a chemotherapy commenced (using doxorubicin & ifosfamid) consisting of four cycles, ending in October 2004.
Scans revealed that the tumors in the lung had seized to increase in size. However three additional metastases were detected in the liver, all of which were of about 4cm in size.
In December 2004 further scans indicated that all metastases had arrested their growth.
However the next scan in February 2005 showed a growth of all except one (situated in the liver) of app. 1 cm.
It was decided to attempt a hormone therapy, which commenced in March 2005, using progesterone acetate, MPA 500mg.
In April 2005 the scan revealed that all metastases had grown. In addition to this, 17 new ones were detected in the lung, all of very small size. Of the tumors in the liver, three had grown by 3cm, and one by 6cm (from 4cm to 10cm size). Also, a new metastase was found on the kidney (not sure which side).
My treating physician, Dr Pink, from the Robert-Roessle Klinik in Berlin-Buch, advises a further course of chemotherapy, consisting of Gemcitabine & Docetaxel. He suggests a duration of 6 cycles, if the treatment were to show signs of success after the first 2 cycles.
Although I have severe reservations of undertaking another chemotherapy (I experienced extreme nausea and distress, which increased with each cycle during the last treatment, and which could not be alleviated, despite the use of a multitude of medication), I am inclined to follow Dr Pink's advice and attempt another course. However I am investigating further avenues of treatment in addition to this.
